Post Pregnancy Workout - How Soon After the Baby Should You Exercise?
It's on every new mom's mind - "How do I lose the extra pounds I gained from being pregnant?" Starting your post pregnancy workout will depend alot on if you had a cesarean or vaginal birth. It also will depend on whether you were an avid exerciser before you got pregnant or if this is something new.
In most cases a light post pregnancy workout can begin as soon as you feel up to it. Light exercise means taking a stroll with baby or stretching exercises. More strenuous exercise, like running, cardio or using weights should wait until you get the doctor's o.k., usually around the 6 week checkup.
If you were used to exercising before you had baby, then your body will respond better after you give birth. Women who never worked out and then try to do too much, too soon, will risk injury and strains. Swimming should probably be avoided in the first 6 weeks due to the risk of bacterial infections.
Some light exercisesyou can try:
- Stretches
- walking
- Kegel Exercises
- Yoga
Light exercises are not only a great way to get back into shape quicker, but they also reduce stress. You are probably not getting enough sleep and especially if you are a new mom, have lots of new worries. A post pregnancy workout will leave you feeling energized and relieve tension.
The most important thing to remember is to enjoy your baby. The pounds will come off soon enough in time. The key is to be consistent, taking time each day to do a little more. Take it slow in the beginning to avoid injuring yourself and soon you will be able to fit into those pre-baby clothes.
